Living Wages

Streamlining Social Services in Flanders with Smart Algorithms

Social services in Flanders face challenges with the application process for living wages, including high non-take-up rates and increasing beneficiary numbers. Currently, social workers conduct extensive investigations for each applicant, leading to long processing times and inefficiencies.

Researchers from KU Leuven have developed an innovative algorithm that leverages data from the Crossroads Bank for Social Security (KSZ) to provide immediate advice on applications. This algorithm can instantly recommend either granting the living wage or conducting further social research, significantly speeding up the decision-making process.

By digitizing this algorithm into a user-friendly prototype, social workers can quickly access reliable advice, reducing the number of steps and documents required. This not only accelerates the decision and payment process but also enhances transparency and efficiency.

The implementation of this tool promises to improve service delivery across all 300 OCMWs in Flanders, ensuring faster support for those in financial distress and paving the way for a more effective social service system.
