Lubbeek

The municipality of Lubbeek, in collaboration with VERA and six other partners, is embarking on an innovative project to create a digital twin. This digital twin will map traffic flows and cycling safety, enabling the municipality to test the impact of future road infrastructure changes in advance.

Project Overview:

In the coming years, Lubbeek will undergo significant road infrastructure works. To understand the impact on traffic flows and improve cycling safety, the municipality is leveraging advanced technology and expertise from various partners:

  • Cyclomedia: Utilizing 360° imagery to accurately map the current road infrastructure.
  • Rear Window: Expanding the Telraam network in Lubbeek to gather comprehensive data on the number of cars, trucks, and cyclists passing through the streets.
  • Cegeka: Building the digital twin on its Mobilize platform, which will serve as the foundation for simulating different scenarios.
  • Transport & Mobility Leuven: Enriching the digital twin with models specifically designed to enhance cycling safety.
  • Municipal Government & Traffic Safety Council: Providing potential scenarios to be simulated, ensuring that the digital twin reflects real-world conditions and challenges.
  • IMOB (UHasselt): Interpreting the results and conducting traffic demand simulations to predict future traffic patterns and identify areas for improvement.
  • VERA: Coordinating the entire project and facilitating knowledge sharing with other local authorities to ensure the project’s success and scalability.

This collaborative effort aims to address critical questions such as the impact of roadworks on traffic flows, identifying routes prone to through traffic, and determining effective measures to improve cycling safety. By simulating various scenarios, the digital twin will help the municipality make informed decisions and implement strategies that enhance overall traffic management and safety.

The project is generously subsidized by the province of Flemish Brabant, highlighting the importance of innovative solutions in improving urban mobility and safety.
