A vibrant commercial center offers numerous benefits for residents, fostering a sense of community and providing convenient access to goods and services. However, local merchants are increasingly struggling due to the rise of e-commerce, which has led to many bankruptcies. To counter this trend and support local businesses, the cities of Halle and Dendermonde are introducing digital information screens in busy areas. These screens will allow local merchants to promote their products directly to residents and visitors, enhancing visibility and driving foot traffic to their stores.

Project Overview:

This innovative project is a collaborative effort involving multiple stakeholders:

  • Halle and Dendermonde: Leading the initiative to support local commerce and improve the vibrancy of their commercial centers.
  • Provinces of Flemish Brabant and East Flanders: Providing regional support and resources to ensure the project’s success.
  • VERA and POLIS: Partnering to develop and test the concept, ensuring it meets the needs of local merchants, city administrations and residents.
  • Connectify (part of the Telenet group): Awarded the contract for their expertise in digital signage solutions. Connectify will be responsible for developing the software, deploying and maintaining the digital screens, leveraging their experience from various cities and municipalities.

The project aims to develop a prototype of the digital information screens, test it in real-world conditions, and refine the system based on feedback. Once the prototype is validated, the solution will be made available to all administrations in Flanders through a framework agreement, allowing other municipalities to adopt the technology and support their local merchants.

The project is subsidized by VLAIO, the Flemish government’s agency for innovation and entrepreneurship. VLAIO’s support underscores the importance of innovative solutions in addressing contemporary challenges faced by local businesses.

By implementing digital information screens, Halle and Dendermonde aim to create a more dynamic and resilient commercial environment, ensuring that local merchants can thrive in the digital age. This project not only supports economic development but also enhances the quality of life for residents by maintaining vibrant and accessible commercial centers.
